Flat Austin and Star Wars · 19 June 2011

We were met by Boba Fett, Jango Fett, Storm Troopers, and even Darth Vader when we went to the Star Wars exhibit at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. And those were just the guests walking through the exhibit. Actually, most of the people taking in the Star Wars exhibit were not dressed up like characters from the movies, but we did see quite a few who were. Most just had robes like Obi-Wan Kenobi wore, but there were others with more elaborate costumes. It was a great exhibit and Thing 2, Thing 3, Flat Austin, and I had lots of fun.

I am a Star Wars fan. Not a fanatic, just a fan. So when the exhibit was in town at the Pacific Science Center, we decided to go. There were costumes, models, and interactive exhibits. And of course, there were the characters walking around graciously posing for pictures. As much as the kids liked getting their pictures taken with the different characters, they enjoyed making maglev vehicles and building and programming robots the best.

My wife, The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi, did not go because she was at a church retreat, but she insisted we go without her. Partly, because she was not going to be available, and partly because she is not much of a Star Wars fan.

(For those fanatics who are incensed that I married a non-fan, remember that I said I was merely a fan and not a fanatic. So despite the fact that she thinks Star Wars is a watered down Star Trek with muppets – she does not like Muppets – we get along fine. As long as we are not discussing Star Wars. Or Muppets.)

Since The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi would not be going with us, she suggested that we take Flat Austin with us. He could fit in the backpack and we could smuggle him in without having to pay any extra admission. Then again, Flat Austin would not really need to pay admission since he was just a tagboard substitute for our friend Austin who now lives far away. (Young students around the country have discovered an old book series about Flat Stanley, a boy who became two dimensional. He has great adventures and so young people everywhere are creating proxies of themselves, sending them to friends and relatives, and asking them to take those proxies on adventures with them.) We took Flat Austin to the exhibit and got pictures of the three kids having a Star Wars adventure.

...I took pictures of the three of the boys with Darth Vader…

As we walked around, I took pictures of the three of the boys with Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, and Boba Fett and Jango Fett. I often heard people around us say that they needed to take pictures with their Flat Stanleys too. Or at least they pointed to Flat Austin and mistook him for Flat Stanley.

Even though Flat Austin was in the backpack much of the trip, the four of us had a great outing. We spent lots of time looking at the Star Wars exhibit and checking out the robot section. And then we wandered around, engaging in the permanent exhibits at the center.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Star Wars exhibit and would recommend it to anybody as it travels around. It was even more fun with Flat Austin and all the other Flat kids taking in the exhibit. Maybe next time though, we will wear our capes and strap on our light sabers like the other Jedi Knights. Hopefully, we will not need to duel Darth Vader.
