Giving Thanks for Family · 24 November 2012

God has blessed me with a wonderful life, but I am most thankful for my family.

We went to The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi’s brother’s house for Thanksgiving this year. We went around the table saying what each person was thankful for before we dug into the scrumptious meal. Of course, we were all thankful for the meal our sister-in-law had lovingly prepared. But more importantly, everybody said they were thankful we could gather together as a family. They used different words and said other things too, but everybody was thankful for family.

As I take time to be thankful this weekend, I realize that my cup runs over. I have too much to list. But since Thing 3 had his birthday on Thanksgiving this year, I figured I could just thank God for family.

Our kids are great. Thing 1 is in school and learning a bit about life on his own. It sounds like he did a typical college student thing and scrounged up some leftover Thanksgiving food from a neighbor since he did not travel to visit any family for the holiday. I am just thankful that he is working hard in his classes.

Thing 2 is enjoying high school life. He is getting good grades, playing in the band, and participating in sports. He ran cross country in the fall and is now swimming for his school. His schedule if full and his mom is busy being his chauffeur. I do not know how he has time to do any homework (not that he does any at home) with all his activities. I am just thankful he is involved.

Thing 3 had his birthday on Thanksgiving day this year so we had a feast to celebrate. We sang and had chocolate cake. And since we were away from home on his special day, he has ended up having a couple extra days of special treatment. He is in middle school doing well and playing the clarinet in the band. I am thankful he has a few close friends to celebrate life together with.

It might sound like the beginning of a Christmas letter, but in reality, I am just proud of my boys and thankful that they are such good kids. Mostly, I am thankful that they are part of my life.

It goes without saying that I am thankful for my wonderful wife. She is a great partner to have raising our kids and is the glue that keeps our family together. I might not always get the stories about The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi completely accurate, but I am thankful that we get to live the stories together.

I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend. We got to see some family and enjoy a great feast together. We spent time with our loved ones and I realized once again how important they are to me. This weekend and always, I am thankful that God has blessed me with a great life and a wonderful family.
