Being Whimsical · 2 June 2013

My friend Mike said that he likes it when I am whimsical.

“Whimsical,” he says. I do not even know how to be whimsical.

Maybe whimsical is what I was when I wrote about my son liking pi. Or maybe even what I have done in the past couple weeks with Pokémon and Cracker Jack hitting the spotlight. But I do not know.

I do not really feel very whimsical. After all, I am a serious writer. I take my art seriously and I figure that everybody else ought to do so as well.

Actually, I do not take myself very seriously. I know I am just a hack with a website throwing out stuff that may or may not stick to the wall. (Whatever that is supposed to mean.) I know I am destined for mediocrity when it comes to writing. After all, it says so on my website. Mediocre Man is not just a catchy title. It is who I am.

Now, do not get all teary eyed or consternated thinking I am putting myself down. I do not really think of myself as a mediocre anything. But I do know that I am just an average guy. I really am just Mediocre Man.

Do not get me wrong. I do my job to the best of my ability and I work hard at everything I do. But I am no shining star in any of my endeavors. I am not the best at anything. And I am okay with that. I am okay that I am not a star athlete or teacher or writer. I am okay with just doing my job to the best of my ability. However mediocre that may be.

(So far, I do not believe I have been very whimsical. I thought that I could do so, but I seem to be waxing philosophical now instead of being whimsical. Still, maybe writing “whimsical” will get me in a whimsical mood and get me out of the mediocre mood. Whimsical, whimsical, whimsical. Then again, maybe mediocrity trumps whimsical.)

When it comes right down to it, I am not sure what whimsical entails. I suppose it is just writing about silly stuff. Or even being silly about a serious subject. Whatever it is, I am failing miserably. So I guess I will stop.

Sorry Mike. Like it or not, I am not feeling very whimsical today.
